Just wanna do the travel thing? Meet Sarah & Katie!
Who
knows why we decide to travel… To break free from the normality
of home? To see places and cultures so foreign from all we’ve grown
up with? To find ourselves? Maybe just to experience life at it’s
most unpredictable? For these and countless other reasons, huge amounts
of young people from Australia and around the world decide it’s
time. Time to stuff a backpack full of comfy clothes, buy the cheapest
plane ticket they can afford, and set off on a life altering adventure.
Between the two of us, we’ve done “the London thing”, seen Europe, America, the Middle East and Africa. Places at opposite ends of the Earth are now held close together in our memory banks. So what is it about travelling? The thrill of stepping out of a new airport, the challenges of getting around with language and cultural barriers of the country, and the scary realisation that no-one knows us here –yet! They call it the travel bug, and it’s bitten us square on the behind. For us, travel has opened doors, our eyes and our minds.
In our travels, one country that we just fell in love with was Turkey. At about the two week mark of our holiday, the decision was made – we were going to live there. But how? After looking into several options, we discovered an abundance of work in the ESL market.
On our return to Australia, we decided to do a TESOL course through Teach International. To be honest, we were doing the course only to get our certificate and be employable in the field. The course itself was just a means to and end for us. But we can’t stress how surprised we were from the first night. The lesson content was practical, informative and relevant – it was interesting because we could see it relating directly to our lives and what we wanted to achieve. Our instructors Brenda and Jenny, were absolutely fantastic - a wealth of knowledge and experience, but natural and passionate about teaching English. The whole class thoroughly enjoyed the course, which culminated in Sunday afternoon drinks – instructors and all!
We can’t recommend this course enough to you all. We loved it. You’ll love it. We just can’t wait to get out there and teach! Turkey is still on the cards, but a detour through Vietnam is planned. With an English teaching accreditation under your belt, the world really is at your feet.
