Eric in Brazil

Brazilian drumsI have not long returned from Brazil - what an excellent country! I would recommend Brazil to anyone seeking employment in a foreign country. The people are all helpful and keen to learn. The language schools I have had contact with are very well organised with a large support system in place; the more advanced students find current issue curriculum books hard to come by, but generally this is the only drawback and easily overcome.

The living standards are high, similar to Australia. Food in restaurants is sold by weight, usually about 13 Real per kilo (roughly AUD$6). Skol, a local brew is about 1.10 Real for a 600ml stubby and cigarettes are 1.20 Real a packet: 1 Real is about 50 cents.

Ipanema beach, Rio de JaneiroIf you want beachfront living be prepared to pay more, but inland (Goiana for example) a three-bedroom house is around the 300R (AUD$150) a month. Expect to pay double this for Rio, Recife and similar coastal areas. Clothing and shoes are very cheap by Australian standards; the markets are the place to buy just about everything and most vendors like a bit of a haggle.

If you like to party this is the country for you! It is an absolutely wonderful place and I'm stressing to return there. I'm only home long enough to organise a visa, and maybe make a little money here while I wait and return to Brazil to live.

I'm a little prejudiced towards Brazil as my future wife is a Brazilian professor, but what an amazing country!
