INDONESIA
Being from Argentina, I always found it amazing that so many Australians
had travelled extensively through Asia. Since I'm from 'the other side
of the world', it always seemed so unattainable. So a few years back,
during my first trip to Australia, I arranged a stop-over in Bali. Wow,
did I feel exotic! Bali was like paradise to me: beautiful beaches
and weather, relaxed environment, great nightlife,
and, above all, it was so cheap! I was in heaven.
Admittedly, there is much more to Indonesia than just Bali. Many Teach International grads have ventured to this country to teach English, many in Jakarta, some in Bandung, others in Medan, and yes, a few even in Bali.
My short stay there was quite a while ago; in
the last few years Indonesia has suffered some
unrest as well as climate-related disasters,
causing the cautious foreigner to leave, and
travel warnings to be issued. The traveller,
and teacher, should
always keep informed about such matters by checking
official websites.
In spite of the recent trouble, Indonesia remains an incredibly desirable destination for the English teacher. Its market is extensive and covers most of the country and there is a high demand for qualified teachers - higher than ever before! The best news is you are not required to have completed a university degree to work there! Salaries for teachers range between AUD$500-1000 per month (with low cost of living) and some schools will offer accommodation as well.
Enjoy the spicy food, such as Nasi Goreng (eggs,
vegetables and rice, but oh so spicy!) and the
delicious burbur dessert - sweet black rice and coconut
milk! Walk along beaches at sunset, get a massage
or ten and just enjoy simple living in a relaxed
and beautiful country in desperate need for teachers, as well as volunteers
to help in other areas.
So, what are you waiting for? Get your TESOL certificate working, purchase one of many cheap flights and fall in love with Indonesia and its people!
