Like many Australians, after graduating from uni I headed to Japan to work on my language skills and teach English! Based near the foot of Mt Fuji I worked for a small cram school and taught all ages from 2 year olds to 70 year olds. Fully immersed in the culture and countryside surroundings and being totally spoilt by my lovely Japanese students, I loved my year in Japan.
After returning to Australia I branched out from teaching General English and gained experience teaching Business English and preparing students for International English proficiency exams. This was the challenge I needed and it broadened my skills as an English language teacher. I also started tutoring English online teaching Japanese business people, housewives and uni students over the internet using skype. It was then I realised I could literally teach English anywhere, anytime.
I had my sights set on the U.K. for a few years. I finally took the plunge, got my visa and headed over, intending to stay for only 2 months doing a Summer camp but ending up staying for 2 years. I found so many work opportunities and, making full use of my London base as the gateway to Europe, I travelled extensively across the northern hemisphere. One Summer I found myself in the middle of Vienna, Austria teaching children for 2 weeks - an all expenses paid trip with plenty of time to soak up the Viennese lifestyle of opera, horse-drawn carriages, palaces, sache torte chocolate cake and gothic cathedrals. I also became a teacher trainer, running London courses weekly and on weekends and sending many British people out worldwide to teach English.
Now based in Brisbane, working for Teach International, I am enjoying training Australians and New Zealanders and seeing where in the world they end up teaching. With the travel bug here to stay, I am looking forward to running courses back in London and Istanbul for Ausssies and Kiwis and opening the door to a world of opportunities to travel and teach. Who knows, one day you may find me in the Greek Islands on the beach with my laptop...teaching English.
